Charleston reports revenue up; new investments and carrier service

The Port of Charleston, South Carolina reported it expects to top $100 million in revenues in its upcoming fiscal year, which begins July 1. The port projects container volume rising six percent, with other tonnage expected to rise nearly 15 percent.

Charleston's FY2001 budget calls for $47 million to be invested in existing facilities with major projects to include expansion of container storage areas, crane upgrades and facility enhancements. As for new service calls, Zim has announced, pending regulatory approval, its first-ever cooperative agreement with COSCO Container Lines. Zim will have space on the new Mediterranean/U.S. East Coast weekly service operated jointly by COSCO, ''K'' Line and Yangming. The service will depart Charleston for Genoa, Naples and Barcelona, and was expected to begin in mid-June.
