A joint venture between Chevron Corp. and Mitsui & Co. Ltd. has been formed to build and lease two 82,200-cubic meter Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) carriers. The construction contract was given to Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. for 2001-2002 delivery, with specifications to accommodate both eastern or western hemisphere terminals. The vessels will be chartered to Dynegy Global Liquids, Inc. for transport of propane and butane to global markets.
The ships will join the world's largest class of LPG carriers, known as "Very Large Gas Carriers" or VLGCs, and exceed 17 knots fully laden.
