New L.A. fireboat design contract awarded

A new fireboat will be seen in and around Los Angeles harbor in the not too-distant future. The vessel will be 105 feet in length and is to replace the 75-year old Ralph J. Scott. The new fireboat design contract has been awarded to the Vancouver, B.C-based naval architecture firm Robert Allan Ltd., which has designed fireboats for Vancouver, B.C., Hong Kong and the ports of Teun Mun and Shenzhen, China.
The L.A. vessel will be a VSP-propelled fireboat with a total pumping capacity of almost 30,000 gpm. Support operations for the vessel are to include rescue, salvage pumping and diving support in the harbor. The firefighting system will be comprised of a foam/water system supplied by main engine drive pumps, plus a water fog/jet system supplied by four independent engine-driven pumps.
A construction contract is expected to be awarded in 2001.
